Recreation Therapy is all about making time fulfilling instead of just filling time. Recreation Therapy is designed to assist individuals in achieving a satisfying leisure lifestyle. Recreation Therapy services utilize recreation and leisure pursuits as a means for:

  • Functional Intervention – To improve functional ability in one or more of the health domains (physical, emotional, cognitive, social etc.) through the use of leisure. For example, increasing fine motor functioning through the use of art, computer, cards.
  • Leisure Education – To educate individuals about the skills and resources required to participate in recreation and leisure pursuits.
  • Recreation Participation – To provide recreation and leisure opportunities that are designed to foster independent functioning within the physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains.

Recreational Therapists work with Complex Continuing Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Outpatient Rehabilitation and Mental Health at Woodstock Hospital. They conduct an assessment of the patient, identify the patient’s recreation therapy goals, develop an intervention plan and evaluate how well a patient is meeting their goals, and revise the plan accordingly.

If volunteers or high school co-op students would like to volunteer or complete required educational placements with our service, please call the Volunteer Coordinator at 519-421-4233 ext. 3650.

If you are a Recreation Therapy intern and you would like to complete your placement or internship at Woodstock Hospital, please contact Director of Therapy and Woodstock Rehab Clinic Sean Willis at 519-421-4211 ext. 2231.
