Woodstock Hospital is an affiliate site of the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).
The OBSP is a province-wide, organized cancer screening program that provides high-quality breast cancer screening throughout Ontario.

The program provides:

  • Screening Mammography at a Canadian Association of Radiologist (CAR) accredited facility
  • Automatic reminders to return in one or two years
  • Screening results sent to both patient and their physician
  • The ability to self-refer to the program

OBSP recommends that women between the ages of 40-74 have a screening mammogram every 2 years.  Women ages 30-69 who are confirmed to be a high risk of developing breast cancer can be screened once a year with a Mammogram and breast MRI.

Women can be determined high risk if they have a referral from their physician and fall into the following risk categories:

  • Are known to have a gene mutation that increases their risk for breast cancer (e.g., BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, PTEN, CDH1)
  • Are first-degree relatives (parent, brother, sister or child) of someone who has a gene mutation that increases their risk for breast cancer (e.g., BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, PTEN, CDH1), have already had genetic counselling and have chosen not to have genetic testing
  • Have been assessed at a genetics clinic (using the IBIS or BOADICEA tools) as having a 25% or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer based on personal and family history
  • Have a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Have had radiation therapy to the chest to treat another cancer or condition (e.g., Hodgkin lymphoma) before age 30 and at least 8 years ago
